MediaTek Dimensity 1000 Octa-Core 7nm SoC with built-in 5G announced

MediaTek just announced Dimensity 1000, the company’s latest flagship SoC with built-in 5G, as it had promised.
The SoC supports 5G two carrier aggregation (2CC CA) with 4.7Gbps downlink and 2.5Gbps uplink speeds over sub-6GHz networks.
Features and technology in the MediaTek Dimensity 1000:Dual 5G SIM technology, in addition to support for services such as Voice over New Radio (VoNR), the 5G SoC delivers seamless connectivity across networks and offers consistent speeds.
Advanced AI-camera enhancements for autofocus, auto exposure, auto white balance, noise reduction, high-dynamic-range (HDR) and facial detection, along with multi-frame video HDR capability.
First mobile SoC to support Google AV1 format up to 4K resolution at 60fpsThe Dimensity 1000 is already shipping to OEMs and the first Dimensity powered devices will start hitting the market in Q1 of 2020, said the company.

China smartphone shipments reach 98.9 million units, down 3.6% YoY in Q3 2019: IDC

Smartphone shipments in China appear to be improving with a 3.9% decline YoY, up from the 6% decline YoY in Q2 2019, thanks due to HUAWEI’s strong domestic sales. The top 5 manufacturers in China for Q3 2019 were HUAWEI, Vivo, OPPO, Xiaomi and Apple with the total smartphone shipments counting to 98.9 million units. HUAWEI claimed the top spot with a record 42% market share in the Chinese market. Vivo sold about 18.1 million units, having strong sales in the US$150-200 and US$200-400 segments with its Y and Z series. OPPO smartphone shipments declined by 21.7% in Q3 2019 with the Reno series and A series being its main volume sales.

Apple supplier Salcomp buys defunct Nokia Chennai Plant, to invest $300 million in five years

It has been over 5 years since Nokia’s Sriperumbudur plant shut down production due to a tax dispute. Now, Finnish based firm Salcomp, manufacturer of chargers/adapters for mobile phones and other electronics for companies like Apple, has bought the defunct plant for about Rs. Salcomp already operates two units in the Sriperumbudur SEZ zone having close to 7000 employees with the new factory said to add over 10000 jobs. Apple’s components is about 60% in the 1.1 million sq ft plant — and the balance would be for others including Foxconn, Xiaomi, Vivo and OPPO, according to ET report. These decisions add to the larger strategy of Apple in expanding production in India for the local and global markets.

Gmail for iOS now lets users add attachments from Apple’s Files app

As Apple makes iOS and iPadOS more user-friendly with regard to sharing documents and files via third party applications, Gmail for iOS has finally integrated the option to add attachments in mails from Apple’s Files app from Gmail itself. With the new update, Gmail users on both iOS and iPadOS will be able to directly add attachments from the Files app in iOS. Earlier, if users needed to share documents or files that were stored locally in their Apple device, they would need to navigate via the Files app and then share from there. The second row will now show Attachments with a file icon that takes the user directly to the native Apple Files picker. The feature will be available by default for all Gmail for iOS app users with both the rapid release domains and the scheduled release domains getting the update from February 12, 2020.

Reliance Jio starts rolling out VoWiFi service in Delhi and Chennai

Recently, Airtel started testing WiFi Calling (VoWiFi) in several cities in India and later officially launched the service. Following Airtel’s launch, Reliance Jio has now started rolling out WiFi Calling facility in Chennai and Delhi-NCR. Several users in Chennai have reported that they are seeing ‘Jio WiFi’ icon or a similar WiFi Calling icon on their smartphones. Although Airtel WiFi Calling worked with all Wi-Fi networks during the testing phase, it is now restricted to Airtel Broadband users.
